December skiing in Zermatt

My husband and I both loved our trip to Zermatt in November. Therefore we didn’t hesitate much when our friends invited us to join them on their ski trip to Zermatt. As it was a weekend after my birthday, we also celebrated my birthday at the snowy slopes of Zermatt and Cervinia.

Morning view to Zermatt & Matterhorn

Similarly as at our first trip, we travelled from Luzern to Zermatt via Lötschberg Tunnel. We arrived to Täsch where we parked our car in covered parking house by the train station. Zermatt is car-free village accessible only by public transport. With our skis and luggage, we’ve boarded the train to Zermatt and enjoyed short scenic ride.

The view from the train to Zermatt

We arrived to Zermatt a bit earlier than our friends, so we had to wait for them. When they arrived, we hired a taxi that brought us and all of our luggage to  apartment we’ve rented. After settling down, we caught up by the bottle of wine. Then, we went out and stroll around Zermatt, again admiring the beauty of this little alpine village. Illuminated by Christmas lights was even prettier.

Already hungry, we found the restaurant my husband and I had dinner on our previous visit. We went there and had a great dinner. I had rösti which was delicious. After dinner we returned back to apartment and went to bed early, to recharge our batteries for the next day at the slopes.

Rösti – thinly grated potatoes, pan-fried until crisp and golden

The next day, we woke up early in the morning. We ate the breakfast, change to ski gear and walk to the Sunegga station from where we ascent to the ski area. The higher we went, the more breathtaking were the views.

The views from ski slopes were amazing

Zermatt’s ski area is at almost 4000 meters above sea level the highest winter sports area in the Alps. On our first visit in November, only one of four areas was open – Klein Matterhorn. This time, all four areas were open. 165 km of total total 360 km slopes were open on that day and allowed us to spend an amazing day on skis.

Ski slopes were well prepared

From Sunegga area we’ve skied all the way to Klein Matterhorn via Gornergrat.  The ski slopes between Sunegga and Gornergrat were nearly empty and we had them all for ourselves. It was simply amazing.

Skiing in Zermatt was a pure pleasure the first time, the second time was even better. Sun was out, pistes were well prepared and the conditions were ideal.

Perfect day on skis

We’ve also skied the Italian part of ski resort and had a delicious lunch at the restaurant: lasagne and tiramisu.

I couldn’t resist the desert. Tiramisu was the best I’ve ever had.

After a great day at the slopes, we returned back to apartment. We refreshened ourselves and packed our things. We bid goodbye to our friends who stayed in Zermatt for few more days, and left with new great memories.

The end of a great day skiing

Till the next time Zermatt

Haha, the only downside of skiing there is the food! 🙂 I love the rosti but I can’t eat it more than once a week! Have you ever been in the observatory in Gornergrat? It’s also a nice hotel with AWESOME views around! You are on the top of the mountain (3,089 metres) and if for some reason you can’t catch the last train to the hotel they make you stay at the 5* in the village 😉 (At least they did a couple of years ago.)

Interesting, I find food at the most mountain cottages great. Better than in some restaurants in the valley, to be honest. 🙂 I agree with you about rösti – it’s rather heavy dish and as you, I can only have it once a week. But there is a variety of dishes you can order. When skiing, I adore Würstsalat and apple strudel they prepare at some Swiss mountain cottages. 🙂
Yes, I’ve been to Gornergrat observatory and I agree with you about the views. They are amazing. I didn’t know! I bet it is awesome to wake up early in the morning to such views. 🙂

Those mountains are incredibly beautiful. Switzerland is a place I’m yet to visit. I really think I’ve been missing out (even more so judging by the look of that rosti – yum!)

Such a perfect getaway!! I really want to visit Zermatt one day.
All the food look amazing. I didn’t know the area was car free, how cool is that. 😀
    Beautiful pictures!!

    Thank you for joining #MondayEscapes

Thank you dear, indeed it was a great trip. 🙂
Yeah, Zermatt is car free and that’s why is very quiet and peaceful. It is a bit less ideal when you need to transfer your luggage and skis from the train station to the chalet. But there are plenty of electric taxis you can hire. 🙂
I know I keep repeating every week, but it was a pleasure participating in #MondayEscapes. Thank you for hosting and sharing all those interesting posts. 🙂

This looks like so much fun! The views are incredible, I think I would crash on skis because I would be so distracted by the beautiful mountain views.

Oh you are so lucky that this is basically in your backyard! So epically beautiful! Denmark is so flat, I crave the mountains! I loved this post – it was my #FarawayFiles favorite – thanks for sharing! Cheers from Copenhagen, Erin

Ohh, I’m so happy to hear you liked it! 🙂 I wish! Zermatt is close, but not close enough for a day trip – from Lucerne is about three and half hours car-drive and additional few minutes train ride. But, true Zermatt is closer to me than to you in Denmark. 🙂
Thank you for hosting #FarawayFiles again! I love browsing all the interesting blogs every Thursday. 🙂

of course like your web-site but you need to check the spelling

First off I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind.
I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before writing.
I have had a tough time clearing my thoughts
in getting my thoughts out there. I do enjoy writing but it just seems like
the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally lost simply just trying to figure out how
to begin. Any ideas or hints? Thanks!

Like all great racing sims, AC nailed the fundamental handling first and foremost and then set about adding cars and tracks to taste. While there’s plenty of racing machinery sitting on slick tyres in there, such is the nuance of the physics model the game’s actually rarely better than when you’re slithering around in an E30 BMW M3 on far less grippy road rubber. We’ve never been more keen to have less grip in a racing game.
